Rockwell Automation’s 9th annual State of Smart Manufacturing Report has unveiled a landscape of both challenges and opportunities for the industry. Surveying over 1,500 manufacturers, the report highlights a significant focus on technology implementation and its impact on the workforce.
One of the key findings reveals that 94% of respondents anticipate maintaining or expanding their workforce as they adopt smart manufacturing technology. This statistic aligns with the fact that 95% of those surveyed are either already using or evaluating such technology, a notable increase from 84% in 2023.
However, amidst this enthusiasm for technological advancement, challenges persist. Change management emerges as the top obstacle in 2024, underscoring the importance of smooth transitions and adaptation processes. To enhance and supplement their workforce, companies are increasingly looking at technologies like autonomous mobile robots, automated guided vehicles, cobots, and wearables.
Attracting employees with the desired skill set remains the number one internal challenge for manufacturers this year, highlighting an ongoing struggle to hire and retain skilled workers. To stay ahead, manufacturers are seeking employees with strong communication, cybersecurity proficiencies, smart technology knowledge, and teamwork skills. These findings emphasize the critical balance between technological innovation and workforce development in the manufacturing sector.
As the manufacturing industry continues its journey towards greater automation and smart technology integration, the State of Smart Manufacturing Report sheds light on the evolving landscape and the need for a skilled and adaptable workforce. Manufacturers must not only invest in cutting-edge technology, but also prioritize strategies for attracting, training, and retaining talent. By addressing these challenges head-on, companies can position themselves for success in an increasingly competitive and dynamic market.
