Michelle Curry’s journey with Sems and Specials began in an unexpected way. Back in 2005, she attended a MWFS event to hear Bruce Hayes speak. The next day, she decided to tour Sems and Specials, a supplier for a distributor Michelle was working for at that time in Wisconsin. During the visit, a conversation sparked, and Michelle inquired about job openings as she was considering relocation. Soon after, she was offered an interview for the Purchasing Assistant position and happily accepted, moving to Rockford in 2006.
In 2022, after years of dedication and learning, Michelle was promoted to Purchasing Manager at Sems and Specials. It’s a testament to the hard work and support she has received throughout her career thus far.
Mentorship and Growth in the Fastener Industry
While Sems and Specials provided the platform, Michelle shares that her career in fasteners wouldn’t be where it is today without her incredible mentors.
“My previous boss, Ned Larsen, was very much a big influence in my growing into now becoming the purchasing manager for Sems and Specials. Diane helped me to grow my sales skills while Debbie helped me to grow as a buyer. It is fun to have a well-rounded set of skills that allows you to be well versified in the industry.”
She went on to share, “Today, Sebastian and Bruce keep me striving to keep working on ways to improve myself to help grow with the company and provide support and/or encouragement to others within our organization as well as outside of it too.”
What Makes Fasteners Special?
The fastener industry might seem like a world of nuts and bolts, but Michelle knows it better as a place where strong bonds are formed. Over the years, she’s built lasting friendships and a sense of community that goes beyond just work.
That includes her involvement with Women in the Fastener Industry (WIFI). “Get involved, step outside your comfort zone, and be willing to learn and grow. WIFI offers a fantastic support system where people are genuinely willing to help. Even if they don’t have the answer themselves, they’ll likely know someone who does. The friendships and support you’ll gain are invaluable.”
Life Beyond Fasteners: Hobbies and Passions
When she’s not immersed in the world of fasteners, Michelle enjoys unwinding by kayaking, spending time with her dog, Sophie, hiking, and relaxing with a good glass of wine. She also enjoys sprint (cycling HIIT) classes at the YMCA.
